Joar Dahn is a graduating political science major from Darby with an emphasis on public administration. Dahn, a native of Liberia, comes from a family of politicians. He continued that legacy at Bloomsburg University serving as Community Government Association president for the past two years.
鈥淚鈥檓 going to miss the support system I had at BU,鈥 Dahn says. 鈥淎s an incoming freshman, I kept hearing 鈥楤e you at BU.鈥 It鈥檚 funny, because I really became myself at BU. My eyes opened to the real world, to real issues and real-life experiences. The opportunities I had here were endless, and I鈥檓 more than positive I wouldn鈥檛 have been able to have some of those opportunities at other institutions. There were some faculty I never even had as professors but I considered them a part of my support system. I鈥檓 going to miss the students. They motivated me every day.鈥
In addition, Dahn was a member of PASSHE鈥檚 Board of Governors, the Board of Directors for the Bloomsburg University Foundation, the Political Science Student Association, the IMPACT Movement, the Black Cultural Society, the Husky Boxing Club, the Wrestling Club and M.I.N.D (Men of Intelligence, Nobility and Desire) 鈥 a male mentorship group on campus.
Dahn served several key leadership roles in addition to the CGA, such as chairman of PASSHE鈥檚 Board of Student Government, president of the African Student Association, advisor to the Bloomsburg University Council of Trustees, advisor to the Multicultural Center, vice president of the Fredrick Douglas Debate Society, as well as the organizer of BU鈥檚 annual Beyond the Fountain event and founder of the CGA鈥檚 Willard E. Bradley Award.
鈥淭he best impression BU has left on me is that I can do anything I鈥檓 willing to work for,鈥 Dahn says. 鈥淭his has manifested so much in my four years at BU. Everything I鈥檝e put my mind to and work hard for I鈥檝e achieved and that鈥檚 something I cherish so much now 鈥 knowing that hard work pays off.鈥
Dahn adds, 鈥淏U has changed me tremendously. I came in as a freshman with goals and a vision, while I achieved those goals and visions, the journey taught me lessons I will never forget. BU provided me the opportunity to become a fearless, vocal student, advocate, lead and friend. Also provided me the opportunity to become a public official in the state of Pennsylvania while still a student.鈥
