Impacting a Community Through Education by Eric Foster

Brendan Cregan 鈥89 (Mansfield) never envisioned becoming a school administrator. 鈥淚鈥檝e always liked school,鈥 says Cregan, secondary principal at Hempfield School District. 鈥淎s a student, I only missed one day in four years of high school. I liked the camaraderie. I liked the teachers, even in the classes in which I didn鈥檛 do well.鈥
This made education a natural fit for Cregan. For college, he chose Mansfield, now part of 麻豆社区, after visiting his older sister, who was studying education. 鈥淓verybody was genuinely friendly. My three sisters and a brother graduated from Mansfield, and two became teachers.鈥
鈥淚 could have never done the big school scene. The smaller setting was exactly what I needed,鈥 says Cregan, president of Mansfield鈥檚 Alumni Association Board. 鈥淎t Mansfield, I learned that the details matter鈥攚hen you鈥檙e preparing a lesson and when you鈥檙e meeting with parents. In my role as principal, the details matter.鈥
鈥淚 taught social studies for 10 years. It was always about building relationships with students and helping them find the best path for themselves,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 about the content. It was about the student. I was teaching students. You鈥檙e using the content to teach the person.鈥
The importance of building relationships has been a cornerstone of his career. 鈥淚t鈥檚 very easy to get stuck behind your desk, to get away from being involved. Even as an administrator, I try to spend as much time in the hallways and classrooms as I can,鈥 Cregan said. 鈥淚n administration, you鈥檙e trying to make a change in the 鈥榳ho鈥 system to help students. Each step impacts a different level of the community,鈥 says Cregan. 鈥淭hey鈥檝e all had different rewards. As a principal, I get to see a broader spectrum of what students do.鈥
