Psychology Teaching Assistants
PSYC 441: Theory and Practice of Academic Psychology explores pedagogical techniques that are supported as effective for teaching psychology in the college classroom. The course also focuses on career development, preparation for graduate school, and professional responsibilities in academia. As an experiential component, students in the class serve as teaching assistants for the mass-enrollment PSYC 100: Introduction to Psychology course. In this role, they practice presenting course content, plan and facilitate review sessions, and hold a weekly student consultation hour to support the Intro Psych students' success.

My favorite thing about Bloomsburg is the professors. I have had so many classes I truly enjoyed, not just because of the content but because of how engaged and passionate my professors were! As a Psychology Major, I love learning about common behavior patterns, discovering the motivations for why we act the way we do, and learning how similar we all actually are. It is really cool to learn theories and concepts in class and then be able to recognize and see how they play out in real life.

I would encourage new students to keep an open mind about their chosen degree. The major you start college with might not be the one you graduate with. One of my favorite things about Bloomsburg is that the town itself is the perfect size. In my opinion, it’s big enough to explore but small enough to really get to know the area.

My words of encouragement to new students are that it is 100% ok to not know what you want to do with your career when you are beginning college. Try to focus on things you find interesting and start from there! Explore through your coursework and find a major you find interesting. I love learning about all the different disciplines psychology has to offer. It is fun to see how we function in our daily lives through this vast field.

My advice to a new student at Bloomsburg is to do your best to manage your time wisely. I use a planner to help me. Classes, homework, extracurriculars, and social events can be hard to keep track of, so it’s important to do your best to stay on top of everything without getting overwhelmed.

My advice to new students is to not be afraid to meet new people. Most likely, everyone else is also in the same boat as you, and they also want to meet new people. Don’t be afraid to come out of your comfort zone. You could meet your best friends from it!

My advice for a new student would be to "go for it." Don't be afraid to go for that job, that position, or join that club. My favorite part of CU-Bloomsburg is the community that builds with each new experience! I would not have the friends that I have today if I didn't believe in myself and have taken that leap of faith!

My word of advice to new students is to use your TAs and professors as resources! They want to help you succeed and help you expand your knowledge so do not be afraid to reach out for help if you need it. Even if you just want to know more about a topic, they would appreciate your curiosity and if you came by their office hours. What I love about being a Psychology major is that you can learn about so many topics and subtopics on really anything that you find interesting underneath the psychology umbrella.

My advice to students entering Psychology is to come in with an open mind! It truly is such a wide field, and there are so many aspects of psychology I didn't even know about before starting college. It is ok to not know what you want to do and to change your mind along the way!

Something I enjoy about Commonwealth – Bloomsburg is the enthusiasm many of the professors (especially psychology professors) have when it comes to teaching. As a student, it is motivating and inspiring to see professors truly care about students' growth and learning experience. Additionally, if I were to tell myself as a new college student, knowing what I know now, I’d say it’s okay to change your mind and change it again. Now is the time to do it! You can do more than one thing with your career/degree, and you should open yourself up to as many opportunities as you can.

Career Goal: Continue to study and potentially achieve master's degree in Psychology while working as either a school counselor or wellness associate. I like that a Psychology bachelor's degree is so broad because it creates many different opportunities for people. The skills I have gained while working through my Psychology degree are highly transferable and I even use them in my everyday life. The flexibility that this major offers allows me to explore many different interests while still being centered on helping others. I hope to apply my knowledge of Psychology to all aspects of my life to hopefully create a positive impact in others' lives.

My advice to any new students here at CU is to utilize your resources! One of the most important tools is your syllabus, so read it, because that is going to be your key to your class. My favorite thing about being a psychology major is being able to learn and pick up patterns that I continue to see in my everyday life. Especially once reaching those higher level applied classes, it's really cool to see the applications of real life unfold right in front of you!

My favorite thing about Commonwealth-Bloomsburg is that there are so many programs that offer a home for people with a variety of different interests and hobbies! There are many opportunities for students to feel welcome and expand their horizons! What I love about being a Psychology major is how much you can relate it to everyday life. This is a very special degree that teaches you about the human mind and how people behave, and when you start getting further into it, you can truly see how much everything you learn in class happens in real life.

One of my favorite things about Bloomsburg University is the spring season. When the cold finally goes away, everyone is eager to go outside again, and you get to see the campus bloom. One thing I love about being a Psychology Major, and that I am looking forward to after graduating, is that I’ll be able to help a lot of people someday.

My advice to a new student is to be committed to each class and to savor the knowledge that you will gain. Your worldview will expand each semester and your understanding of who you are will grow in pulchritudinous ways. As a Psychology major, I love that the knowledge I gain from each course is continuously applicable to myself and the people around me.
